A hippogriff is a magical creature that has the front legs, wings, and head of a giant eagle and the body, hind legs and tail of a horse. They are proud creatures and only allow wizards who lock eyes and bow to them to approach. They are known to be deadly and to attack on insult - a lesson Draco Malfoy learns the hard way. In order to protect Buckbeak from death, Harry and Hermione free him and send him to save Sirius from the Dementor's Kiss in The Prisoner of Azkaban.
